Enterotoxemia (ET)-Overview
Enterotoxemia (ET) is a bacterial disease that primarily affects sheep and goats, especially young animals. It is caused by the overgrowth of toxin-producing bacteria in the intestines, leading to severe illness and sudden death.
Species Affected
- Common disease of sheep and goats, especially among young animals.
Clinical Signs
- Dullness
- Opisthotonos (arching of the neck and back)
- Convulsions
- Coma
- Sudden death
- In adult sheep, prolonged illness may cause diarrhea and staggering.
Preventive Measures
- Affected animals may be treated with suitable antibiotics.
- Vaccination should be carried out in consultation with veterinarians and as per State Animal Husbandry Authorities' recommendations.
- Strict biosecurity measures should be followed.
- Proper disposal of carcasses in a hygienic manner.
- Restriction of grazing areas, preference for stall feeding.
- Provision of vitamins and probiotics to support gut health.
