Enterotoxemia (ET)-Overview

Enterotoxemia (ET) is a bacterial disease that primarily affects sheep and goats, especially young animals. It is caused by the overgrowth of toxin-producing bacteria in the intestines, leading to severe illness and sudden death.

  • Etiological Agent: Clostridium perfringens, primarily types C and D.
  • Species Affected

    • Common disease of sheep and goats, especially among young animals.

    Clinical Signs

    • Dullness
    • Opisthotonos (arching of the neck and back)
    • Convulsions
    • Coma
    • Sudden death
    • In adult sheep, prolonged illness may cause diarrhea and staggering.

    Preventive Measures

    • Affected animals may be treated with suitable antibiotics.
    • Vaccination should be carried out in consultation with veterinarians and as per State Animal Husbandry Authorities' recommendations.
    • Strict biosecurity measures should be followed.
    • Proper disposal of carcasses in a hygienic manner.
    • Restriction of grazing areas, preference for stall feeding.
    • Provision of vitamins and probiotics to support gut health.
