Mega Cleanliness Drives with citizen participation & partner mobilization Offices & institutional buildings
As part of the Swachhata Hi Seva 2024, ICAR-National Institute of Veterinary Epidemiology and Disease Informatics (ICAR-NIVEDI) actively participated in mega cleanliness drive on 22.09.2024 which is aimed at ensuring hygiene, cleanliness and waste management in offices and institutional buildings. This drive, involving citizen participation and partner mobilization, is aligned with the broader national mission of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan to maintain a clean and healthy environment across public and institutional spaces. This activity was coordinated by Dr. Narayanan G, Senior scientist, Dr. R. Sridevi, Senior scientist, and Dr. C. S. Sathish Gowda, Scientist of ICAR-NIVEDI.
Objective of the Mega Cleanliness Drive: The Mega Cleanliness Drive at ICAR-NIVEDI sought to: 1. Enhance Cleanliness and Sanitation: Ensure that all office spaces, institutional buildings, and surrounding environments remain clean, hygienic, and free of litter. 2. Encourage Citizen Participation: Mobilize citizens, staff, and stakeholders in the cleanliness initiatives, fostering a sense of responsibility and community ownership of public spaces. 3. Promote Waste Management Practices: Advocate for proper waste segregation, reduction of waste, and adoption of eco-friendly waste management practices such as composting and recycling. 4. Engage Partners: Involve governmental, non-governmental organizations, and private partners in achieving the cleanliness goals, ensuring a collaborative approach to sustainable hygiene practices.
The cleanliness drive at ICAR-NIVEDI was extensive, covering: 1. Offices and Institutional Buildings: The primary focus was on cleaning office premises, corridors, common areas, washrooms, and laboratories. The institutional buildings, including the library, conference rooms, and research facilities, were thoroughly cleaned and sanitized from the beginning of Swachhata Hi Seva 2024. 2. Surrounding Areas: Areas surrounding ICAR-NIVEDI, including parking spaces, gardens, and adjacent streets, were cleaned. Debris and waste collected from these areas were properly disposed. 3. Waste Segregation and Disposal: Employees and participants were educated on the importance of separating biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste, with emphasis on recycling and reusing materials wherever possible. Citizen Participation and Partner Mobilization 1. Staff and Employee Engagement: The cleanliness drive saw active participation from the staff of ICAR-NIVEDI, including scientists, administrative personnel, and technical staff. Everyone contributed to cleaning their workspaces and public areas in and around the institution.
Outcomes and Impact 1. Improved Cleanliness and Hygiene: The institutional buildings and surrounding areas were visibly cleaner, with regular sanitation and waste management practices put in place. 2. Increased Awareness: Through active participation, the drive successfully raised awareness about cleanliness and hygiene not just among ICAR-NIVEDI staff but also in the local community, fostering long-term behavioral changes. The Mega Cleanliness Drive at ICAR-NIVEDI, under the Swachhata Hi Seva 2024, demonstrated the power of citizen participation and partner mobilization in promoting cleanliness, hygiene, and environmental stewardship. By bringing together the institute’s employees, the drive successfully achieved its goals of enhancing cleanliness within and outside the office and institutional spaces.
