The Peste des Petits Ruminants Eradication Programme (PPR-EP) is a Central Sector initiative under the Livestock Health and Disease Control (LH&DC) scheme, receiving 100% central assistance. Its primary objective is to eradicate Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR), a highly contagious viral disease affecting sheep and goats, by 2030. The strategy involves a four-year mass vaccination campaign, targeting all healthy, non-pregnant sheep and goats over four months of age, followed by active surveillance to ensure disease eradication. PPR, caused by a Morbillivirus from the Paramyxoviridae family, can spread rapidly with an infection rate of 90% and a mortality rate reaching 70%, making its control crucial for livestock health and rural livelihoods. This eradication effort aligns with the Global PPR Eradication Programme (GEP) and the National Strategic Plan, ensuring coordinated action across states.
